In short: These Terms are an agreement between you and the people who make Modal. By using Modal, you accept them.
- 1.1Who we are. Modal is a launcher for Minecraft: Java Edition. It is developed and maintained by an independent, unregistered group of developers (“the Modal developers”, “we”, “us” or “our”). We are not a company, and Modal is not a commercial product.
- 1.2What these Terms cover. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) apply to:
- (a)official builds of the Modal launcher that we publish;
- (b)this website; and
- (c)any other service we provide under the Modal name,
- 1.3Your agreement. By downloading, installing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
- 1.4Definitions. In these Terms, the following words have these meanings:
- Modal, the launcher
- The Modal desktop application.
- Official build
- A copy of Modal compiled and published by us on this website, or through another channel that this website lists as official.
- Third-party content
- Mods, modpacks, shaders, resource packs, data packs, worlds, server listings and any other material made by someone other than us.
- You
- The person using the Service.
In short: Anyone who can legally accept these Terms, or whose parent or guardian accepts them on their behalf.
- 2.1You may use the Service if you are able to enter into a binding agreement under the law that applies to you.
- 2.2If you are under the age of majority where you live (18 in Hungary), you may use the Service only if a parent or legal guardian has read these Terms and accepts them on your behalf.
- 2.3Microsoft sets its own age requirements and parental controls for Microsoft accounts and for Minecraft. Those continue to apply when you play through Modal.
In short: You need a genuine copy of Minecraft: Java Edition. Modal helps you launch it, but Microsoft and Mojang own the game and set its rules.
- 3.1Not an official product. Modal is an independent project.
NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.
- 3.2You need your own license. To play, you must sign in with a Microsoft account that owns a valid license for Minecraft: Java Edition. Modal does not sell, include or grant a license to Minecraft.
- 3.3Signing in. You sign in through Microsoft’s own sign-in page. We never see or store your Microsoft password. The access tokens Microsoft issues are kept on your device so that Modal can launch the game for you, and are never sent to us.
- 3.4Microsoft’s terms still apply. Your use of Minecraft remains governed by the Minecraft End User License Agreement (opens in a new tab), the Microsoft Services Agreement (opens in a new tab) and the Minecraft Usage Guidelines (opens in a new tab). Where those terms and ours conflict on anything about Minecraft or your Microsoft account, theirs prevail.
- 3.5Account decisions. Microsoft and Mojang may restrict, suspend or close accounts under their own rules. We have no control over those decisions and cannot reverse them.
- 3.6No workarounds. You must not use Modal to play Minecraft without a valid license, or to get around Minecraft’s authentication in any way.
In short: Modal is free software under GPL-3.0. You can use, study, share and change it, and nothing in these Terms takes that away.
- 4.1The license. Modal’s source code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (“GPL-3.0”). A copy is included with the source code, and the full text is available at gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0 (opens in a new tab).
- 4.2Your freedoms. GPL-3.0 lets you run Modal for any purpose, study and change how it works, and share copies of the original or of your modified versions, as long as you follow the conditions of that license.
- 4.3GPL-3.0 comes first. Nothing in these Terms restricts any right you have under GPL-3.0. If anything in these Terms conflicts with GPL-3.0 as it applies to Modal’s code, GPL-3.0 prevails. These Terms cover the parts of the Service that GPL-3.0 does not, such as this website, our name and logo, and how the Service is used.
- 4.4What the license covers. GPL-3.0 covers Modal’s own code. Minecraft, Microsoft’s services and third-party content each come with their own licenses and terms.
In short: Fork Modal as much as you like, but give your version its own name so nobody mistakes it for ours.
- 5.1Our name and logo. The name “Modal” and the Modal logo identify official builds. As section 7(e) of GPL-3.0 permits, the license does not grant any right to use them.
- 5.2If you share a modified version, you must not use the Modal name or logo in a way that suggests your version is official, made by us or endorsed by us. Give it a distinct name and icon, and say clearly that it is unofficial. You are welcome to state truthfully that your version is based on Modal.
- 5.3Forks and unofficial builds. We are responsible only for official builds. Versions that others compile, modify or redistribute are the responsibility of whoever distributes them, and these Terms do not cover them. To be sure you have a genuine copy, download Modal only from this website.
In short: Mods and packs in Discover are made by other people and hosted by Modrinth and CurseForge. Look before you install.
- 6.1Where content comes from. The Discover section lets you browse and install third-party content listed on Modrinth and CurseForge. We do not create, host, review or moderate that content.
- 6.2No endorsement. When Modal lists, ranks or recommends content, that does not mean we endorse it. Recommendations are generated automatically on your device from your own activity. They are suggestions, not reviews.
- 6.3Use your judgement. Third-party content can contain bugs, cause crashes, corrupt worlds or, in rare cases, contain malicious code. You install it at your own risk. Check where content comes from and how well regarded it is, and keep backups.
- 6.4Their licenses and terms. Third-party content belongs to its authors and comes with its own license. Modrinth and CurseForge have their own terms and privacy policies, which apply when Modal fetches content from them. Respect authors’ licenses, and do not redistribute their work unless the license allows it.
- 6.5Servers. Minecraft servers you find or join through Modal are run by third parties with their own rules. We are not responsible for what happens on them.
- 6.6Mod loaders. Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt are independent projects. When Modal installs one of them, that software is provided under its own license.
- 6.7No affiliation. Modal is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Modrinth, CurseForge, the mod loader projects or their owners. These services may change or stop working with Modal at any time, for example if they change how their systems work, and we cannot guarantee they will remain available in Modal.
In short: Don’t use Modal to break the law, harm other people, or abuse the services it connects to.
- 7.1When using the Service, you agree not to:
- (a)break any applicable law, or infringe anyone’s rights, including their intellectual property rights;
- (b)break the Minecraft End User License Agreement, the Microsoft Services Agreement, or the terms of Modrinth, CurseForge or any other service Modal connects to;
- (c)get around Minecraft’s licensing or authentication, or help anyone else to do so;
- (d)use Modal to send automated or excessive requests to Microsoft, Modrinth, CurseForge or any other service, or otherwise interfere with how those services work;
- (e)distribute malware or anything else harmful under the Modal name, or disguised as Modal;
- (f)pretend to be us, or present an unofficial build as an official one; or
- (g)attack, probe or disrupt this website or its hosting, except for good-faith security research that you report to us privately at pacsybusiness@gmail.com.
- 7.2This section does not limit your rights under GPL-3.0 to run, study, modify or share Modal’s code.
In short: Modal sends us nothing about you. The services it connects to see what any website you visit would see.
- 8.1What we collect through the launcher: nothing. Modal sends us no analytics, telemetry, usage statistics or crash reports. Your instances, settings, sign-in tokens and recommendation data stay on your device.
- 8.2Who Modal connects to. To do its job, Modal connects directly to:
- Microsoft and Mojang, to sign you in, confirm that you own Minecraft and download the game’s files;
- Modrinth and CurseForge, to search for, display and download content; and
- mod loader projects (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt), to download loader files when you create an instance that uses one.
- 8.3If you email us. We use your email address and message only to deal with your request. We do not share them with anyone or use them for marketing, and we will delete them if you ask.
- 8.4This website. This website does not use cookies or analytics. It serves its own fonts and loads nothing from third parties, so your browser connects only to our hosting provider, which may keep standard server logs.
- 8.5Your rights. If the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to you, you have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data, and to object to its processing. Contact us to use these rights. You may also complain to a data protection authority. In Hungary, that is the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (NAIH) (opens in a new tab).
In short: Modal is a volunteer project. We do our best, but we can’t promise it will always be available or keep working.
- 9.1We may change, add or remove features, release new versions, or stop developing Modal at any time.
- 9.2Changes made by Microsoft, Mojang, Modrinth, CurseForge or the mod loader projects can break features of Modal without warning. Keeping Modal up to date gives you the best chance of compatibility.
- 9.3Modal is free of charge. We have no obligation to provide support, fixes or updates, although we are always glad to receive bug reports.
In short: Modal comes as it is, without guarantees. Rights that the law says cannot be taken away still apply.
- 10.1To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. This is consistent with sections 15 and 16 of GPL-3.0.
- 10.2We do not promise that the Service will be uninterrupted, free of errors or secure, or that it will work with every version of Minecraft, every mod or every computer.
- 10.3Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any warranty or right that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including mandatory consumer protection law.
In short: Keep backups. We are not liable for lost worlds or for problems caused by others, except where the law says we must be.
- 11.1To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for:
- (a)loss or corruption of worlds, saves, instances, settings or other data;
- (b)damage caused by third-party content, servers or services;
- (c)any action Microsoft or Mojang takes on your account;
- (d)problems caused by unofficial builds or modified versions of Modal; or
- (e)indirect or consequential loss, such as lost profits or lost opportunities.
- 11.2Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, for harm to life, physical integrity or health, or for any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.
Please back up your worlds. Do it regularly, and especially before you update Modal, change loader or game versions, or install new mods.
In short: You can stop using Modal whenever you like. Your GPL-3.0 rights end only as that license says.
- 12.1You can stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling Modal. To remove your local data as well, delete Modal’s data folder, which holds your instances, settings and sign-in information.
- 12.2We may stop offering the Service, or any part of it, at any time.
- 12.3Your rights under GPL-3.0 end only as described in section 8 of that license.
- 12.4Sections 4, 5, 6.4, 10, 11, 14 and 15 continue to apply after these Terms end, along with any other provision that by its nature should.
In short: If these Terms change, the new version will appear here with a new date. Big changes will be announced in advance where possible.
- 13.1We may update these Terms from time to time, for example when Modal gains new features or the law changes.
- 13.2We will publish any updated Terms on this page and change the effective date and version number at the top. Where reasonably possible, we will announce significant changes on this website before they take effect.
- 13.3If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree with them, please stop using the Service. Any copy of Modal you already have remains yours to use under GPL-3.0.
In short: Hungarian law applies. If you are a consumer, you keep the protections of your own country’s law and can go to your local courts.
- 14.1These Terms, and any dispute arising from or relating to them, are governed by the laws of Hungary, excluding its conflict of laws rules.
- 14.2If you use the Service as a consumer, the choice of Hungarian law does not take away any protection given to you by the mandatory law of the country where you live. If you live in the European Union, you may also bring proceedings in the courts of your own country.
- 14.3Apart from that, the courts of Hungary have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from these Terms.
- 14.4Before starting formal proceedings, please contact us at pacsybusiness@gmail.com so that we can try to resolve the issue informally. Most problems can be solved with a conversation.
- 15.1Entire agreement. These Terms, together with GPL-3.0 for Modal’s code, form the entire agreement between you and us about the Service.
- 15.2Severability. If any part of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the rest remains in effect, and that part is applied as far as the law allows.
- 15.3No waiver. If we do not enforce a provision straight away, we have not given up our right to enforce it later.
- 15.4Transfer. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to anyone who takes over the Modal project, as long as your rights are not reduced as a result.
- 15.5Language. These Terms are written in English. If we provide a translation and it differs from the English version, the English version prevails, unless mandatory law requires otherwise.
- 15.6Trademarks. Minecraft is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB. Microsoft is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation. Modrinth, CurseForge, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt are names or trademarks of their respective owners. We use these names only to describe what Modal works with.
